Bryan Peterson Interviews Andrew Suryono

If you've followed Andrew for a while, you'll know that one of Andrew's first photography teachers is Bryan Peterson.

His book, Understanding Exposure, is the first photography book that he's ever read. He read it along with his first DSLR camera's manual.

After Andrew received his first international awards, he reached out to Bryan to tell the good news. Bryan immediately responded by requesting to interview him for his newsletter!

At BPSOP, we love to hear success stories from photographers, here’s one we want to share with you from Andrew Suryono, who recently had one of his amazing photos nominated for Sony’s 2015 World Photography Competition.

How long have you been shooting, Andrew?

I’ve been snap shooting since I was 15 years old using an Olympus 2MP camera. I was born in the digital age so that was my first ever camera. I’ll throw in a little secret here: I never shot a single roll of film in my life! I upgraded from a snap shooter to an enthusiast after reading your book, “Understanding Exposure” – this was 6 years ago. I purchased your book along with my first DSLR: Nikon D40. Your images in the book was a great source of inspiration and your easy to understand instruction really make learning photography a breeze.

Where do you live?

I live mostly in my hometown: Surabaya, Indonesia. This place is really close to the super famous Bali island where I took the orangutan and sunset picture. It’s truly a joy to be able to live near this place. I also frequently visit USA to visit family members that live there (Northern California).

What are some of your photographic goals?

My photographic goal is to create moving and memorable travel images. I want people to be moved and positively impacted with my photography.

Favorite subjects to shoot?

Pretty much everything! I consider myself to be a travel photographer so I love to shoot everything. However, if I’m pressed to choose the subject, I’d say wildlife and landscape.

Favorite places that you have traveled so far?

1. Bali for its diverse photo opportunities

2. New Zealand for its gorgeous landscape

3. Tibet for its deep rooted culture
