Hotel Majapahit Surabaya

If I can use 3 words to describe Hotel Majapahit I will use History, Luxury, and Nature. This historical hotel at the center of Surabaya will give you a truly unique experience. The buildings will give you a very nostalgic, Dutch Colonial style from the 1900s and you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time in luxury.

I had the pleasure to work with Majapahit Hotel to show their recently renovated rooms and their lush, beautiful garden. This five-star hotel with boutique facilities and immaculate garden landscapes never fails to impress its visitors.

Before I show you the photographs, let me tell you a bit of a story about this hotel.

Perhaps the most remembered moment in this hotel is the tearing of the Holland flag also known as the “Flag Incident” in Indonesia. It took place on 19 September 1945. Mr. Ploegman from Holland started to erect the Holland National Flag in this hotel after the Indonesian independence on 17 August 1945.

This act was seen as a very provocative act for a nation that just declared its independence so an Indonesian soldier climbed the tower and ripped the blue part of the holland flag (red, white, blue) and turned it into the indonesian flag (red, white).

You can see the story of this flag incident by looking at the artwork in the hotel lobby.

One of the standout rooms in this Hotel is the Presidential Suite. This suite is often used by Indonesian presidents who come to visit Surabaya. When not in use, you can book and use this room for events such as weddings or corporate gatherings. Here’s a view of the master bedroom of the Presidential Suite, 2nd floor.

The First floor of the Presidential Suite consists of the function room, dining room, and office. This area can easily accommodate 50+ guests.

If you feel the Presidential Suite is too big for you, the classic room is also a great option. You can still experience the Dutch Colonial style in a much more comfortable setting. The Majapahit Hotel just renovated their classic room and it looks much more comfortable and homey.

Despite all the luxury, Hotel Majapahit still managed to keep most spaces open. You will enjoy the green and lush garden as you step out of your room. There is plenty of garden bench for you to sit at to enjoy a very tranquil experience.

The biggest garden is located outside the presidential suite. You can walk there and enjoy seeing the sunset from behind the trees. I had a great time photographing the trees, shadows, and the sunset from this area as you can see below.

If you’re visiting Surabaya, my lovely hometown, I would highly recommend visiting or even staying at this hotel to travel back in time in luxury, learn a bit of Indonesian history and enrich your travel experience.
